Propionic Acid Production in Pseudomonas Putida: Metabolic Engineering to Optimize Sustainability
Propionic acid is a common food preservative and component of plastics, coatings, herbicides, and pharmaceuticals, with global production and use of approximately 400,000-500,000 metric tons annually. Currently, propionic acid is made from petrochemicals; its production is associated with fossil fuel dependence, greenhouse-gas emissions, and other refinery-related impacts such as air pollution and soil and water contamination. Biological production of propionic acid represents a sustainable alternative with little to no impact on the environment; producing propionic acid in a microorganism, such as Pseudomonas putida, represents a sustainable alternative route to manufacturing.
