Is the underwater world 2D or 3D?: An acoustical modeling exploration

Acoustic propagation modeling is very important for acoustical oceanography for various applications including acoustic tomography and acoustic communications. Historically, these models are radials that only consider the ocean as 2D slides. Recent open source models now allow for fully 3D modeling. These new models are compared to the historical to highlight the conditions when 3D modeling should be leveraged.
