Cosmic Contamination: Investigating Outgassing as a Result of Heat Sealing
Outgassing may have a negative impact on the reliability and accuracy of scientific instruments when in space, by contaminating optic lenses or sensors. A common process used to store these instruments is heat sealing them in KenLam bags; however, it is uncertain whether the action of heat sealing may result in outgassing. This project investigates the potential of outgassing contamination on scientific instruments upon heat sealing a KenLam bag, by utilizing a 3D printed test fixture, silicon wafer, and ellipsometer to measure contamination levels.
