Neutron and Gamma Ray Spectroscopy for Homeland Protection and Materials Science

Neutron and Gamma Ray spectroscopy have multiple applications across basic sciences and homeland protection applications. The three student cohort has engaged in original research across this broad domain. We review student projects in (A) Bonner Sphere neutron spectroscopy of environmental neutrons, (B) gamma ray spectroscopy using low cost tools in development of an educational program at the Whiting School of engineering, (C) machine learning algorithms for directional radiation detection, and (D) inelastic neutron spectroscopy of the polymer TPX utilizing data taken at the Spallation Neutron Source. Live demonstrations of gamma spectroscopy and directional detection algorithms will be presented.
