Free-Space Optical Comms: How Lasers Can Transmit Data
Students are designing and demonstrating a free space optical-comms (FSO) link which involves a laser modulated with information sent through a short free-space link. They are designing the entire system to be bi-directional (can send and receive information) and will eventually demonstrate how to play a short multiplayer game over an FSO link. FSO is a growing comms technology that is becoming particularly relevant in the space domain for its ability to deliver high-bandwidth, secure, and highly-directional links.
