Dead reckoning - calculating one's position without the use of landmarks - is notoriously sensitive to sensor errors. Generally, the noise and drift in off the shelf inertial measurement units make them unsuitable for this technique, but machine learning (ML) approaches show promise in changing that. TinyML, machine learning on low-power embedded systems, is an avenue to make that portable.
